WISS NEWS

Our cohort of Grade 5 students recently faced one of the biggest challenges in the life of an IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) student - The Primary Years Programme Exhibition (PYPX). This exhibition represents a significant event, synthesizing the essential elements of the programme and sharing them with the greater school community. For students, this extensive research project builds the foundational skills they will need as they progress through their school career to the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and beyond. The exhibition showcases the knowledge and skills students gained throughout the programme as they exhibit the extensive inquiry learning process demonstrating their readiness for further education.

After eight weeks of hard work, the Grade 5 students staged their PYP Exhibition. The event celebrated their learning journey, showcasing their skills, knowledge, understanding, and the attributes of the IB Learner Profile they developed throughout their engagement with the PYP.

The transdisciplinary theme for this PYP Exhibition (PYPX) was Who We Are. The United Nation's Global Goals for Sustainable Development served as a springboard for inquiry and action. The central idea of the Exhibition was ‘People Can Use Their Interests And Passions to Take Action,’ which allowed students a unique opportunity to make strong personal connections to the United Nation's Global Goals for Sustainable Development and other global issues.

The process began with a mini-exploration of personal interests and passions to help the students select a local or global issue they were passionate about. The students then began in-depth individual and group inquiries into their issues, in which they conducted research and interviewed experts.

Research and experience inform us as educators that including science, technology, engineering, and maths within early education provides a strong foundation for applying problem-solving skills. A focus on these skills is embedded within our Programme of Inquiry. Within Primary, our Robotics programme and coding have long been integral to our After School Activity (ASA) provision, with students gaining opportunities to compete in local and regional ACAMIS events.

At the Western International School of Shanghai, Primary School students learn Mathematics through technology, using Dash robots. Students practice addition and subtraction skills learning concepts of multiplication and division. Students connect to positive and negative integers, coding, and problem-solving skills through activities like this.

The Primary Robotics teaching teams recently attended a local Shanghai interschool event in preparation for future competitions. Our well-trained teachers implement the use of our new Sphero and Dash robots to incorporate this technology further into the curriculum for students to not only gain exposure to this technology but also to further develop skills in communication, collaboration, and teamwork.
