The WISS Education rests on four unyielding pillars of learning: Academics, Sports, Arts, and Community Service. At the Western International School of Shanghai (WISS), Arts are essential to our curriculum across our Early Years, Primary and Secondary School. The Visual Arts Programme offered at WISS skillfully aligns with the IB curriculum. It focuses on teaching students to critique and reflect on their work and develop analytical and problem-solving skills, which are critical for success in the 21st Century Workplace.
As part of the IB programme, the IB Art Exhibition is a requirement and a highly worthwhile experience for the Diploma Programme Visual Arts students. It culminates creative thinking and expression in multiple art media, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, and digital media. Students invested heavily in their art pieces for the exhibition, their Process Portfolio, and their Comparative Study.
The exhibition displayed artistic talent, color, commitment, and passion reflecting their creative spirit and determination. IB students inquired into common phenomena and daily topics through art. We saw meditations on identity, culture, femininity, nature, and more aspects of life across various 2D, 3D, and mixed media. Besides the skills and effort evident throughout the exhibition, a big takeaway was the impressive quality and variety of work on display.
In the words of Jamie Wilson, Visual Arts Teacher at WISS: "The passion and drive that characterizes the DP students here at WISS have convinced me that greater ambitions are possible, and I hope that you, like myself, cannot wait to see what they create next."
At WISS, we believe it is essential for Art students to connect with successful artists in the field to draw inspiration from their work and learn from their experience. Recently our Secondary School students spent the day with Shanghai-based artist David Redic at his exhibition "Rubies in the Rubb" at the Artscape Gallery.
This was a golden opportunity for students to engage with the artist and learn more about his work and the inspiration behind it. Students left the experience eager to apply what they learned to their work.
